Water being saved; share tips

Having regularly followed the drought news for years: farms in California taken out of production, a Startup well running dry, increasing wildfires throughout the West, I was dismayed to hear the city of Everett calling for home water reduction measures. My home is already lean in water use. I have not watered my lawn this year, nor washed my car at home. I am also participating in the Snohomish Conservation District “Lawns to Lettuce” program to convert my lawns to permanent and productive plants to save water.

May I suggest that The Herald and the city of Everett cooperate to prominently solicit and publish water saving ideas from citizens? We in Washington have been blessed with a seemingly unending supply of water and could all use a refresher on conservation.

My first tip: When you use your hot water do you run it until it is hot at the tap? What happens to the cooler water? I call this “clean grey water” and collect it for my garden. We need to think about such normal habits.

A play book collected from households and widely published might help to both raise awareness and reveal creative opportunities for conservation.
