In his Guest Commentary on Oct. 20, Phil Sullivan, executive director of Senior Services of Snohomish County, states that the fact there are 77 million aging Baby Boomers in the United States has been called a crisis.
He further states, “The issues raised by an aging population pose a major challenge for policy leaders and society as whole.”
The phrase “aging population” is a misnomer. Because we know we do not start aging when we turn 50 and qualify for AARP membership. We must accept that everyone living, even infants, are aging.
Mr. Sullivan states, “…the aging of our population will have a tremendous impact on every community in America…” A more tremendous impact on every community in America would be if a major catastrophe such as an asteroid changed the “aging population” to a “non-aging population” because one is either aging or one is dead. Please retire the nonsensical phrase “aging population” once and for all.
