As much as we admire their courage under pressure, we also ought to take a moment to express our gratitude to the flight crew and passengers aboard American Airlines Flight 63. Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, they taught each of us a valuable lesson. Our destiny doesn’t belong exclusively to suicide bombers or fanatical lunatics bent on destruction.
Thanks to quick thinking and heroism, everyone on board the Paris to Miami flight lived to tell the harrowing tale of mid-air drama involving explosives in a man’s shoes and a book of matches. The outcome could have been very different.
Anyone willing to die for such a misguided cause is a formidable foe — Sept. 11 proved that. But the daring events of Dec. 22 also proved that average people are up to the challenge of taking on the enemy if they have to.
