The attempts to levy another raise in the gas tax is sheer idiocy if we, the voters, allow it to happen! We have a high tax rate on all gasoline and diesel, but the projects that the tax was supposed to fund never seem to get done because the money collected is not used for the intended purpose. The tunnel project in Seattle is a prime example of flawed logistics and expenditure. Now that gas is down around $2.50 or so, the tax-raising portion of our government thinks it is a wonderful time to raise the tax by a significant amount.
Just think. At $2.50 a gallon the tax would increase it to $2.62. OK, what happens when the price of gas escalates back to $4-plus a gallon? Oh, yes, it most assuredly will and the revenues will even be greater to the “government.” Meanwhile, the population thinking and passing the tax at the low present rate won’t hurt much, will be paying a lot more and there is no guarantee the money will be used solely for transportation that will be of use to all Washington residents. We are about to take it in the shorts again. When do we get smart and stop this abuse of our purse strings?
