The April 28 letter from reader Linda Varon raised a very important question: Why write letters to the editor about abortion? (“Abortion: Sending letters to the editor not the answer”). As she correctly points out, “it will never be settled as to which side is right.” However, I don’t think this is the most important question. The real question is, how can a supposedly civilized and advanced society like ours continue to place such a low value on human life and to allow the brutal and violent taking of young lives while having the unmitigated gall to call it “reproductive health”? I can assure you, without hesitation, there is nothing healthy about abortion.
I think it critically important to keep this issue in our public debate and in our conscience. Only by honestly discussing what is happening to millions of innocent, unborn children can we ever hope to truly confront the unspeakable horror of abortion. Ms.Varon said she has her own opinion on this “delicate matter.”
I see absolutely nothing “delicate” about abortion and I would like her to express her opinion publicly, whatever it is, because it will help us keep this issue front and center. Sending letters to the editor may not be the answer, but keeping this issue in front of us all is a beginning.
Let’s not confuse this life and death issue with vague terminology, rhetoric or politics; we have to see abortion for what it really is if we ever hope to come to our senses. As for Ms. Varon’s final comment, I can’t think of a more “community oriented issue” than the value we place on human life. Please keep printing letters on this topic.
