How long does it take to forget the largest, most costly and most important invasion in history? Apparently 64 years.
I searched in vain for any mention in Friday’s Herald, and found one sentence on the comics page.
Are all the people who took part dead? Are their families dead? Are we so hung up on gay marriages and bikinied baristas that we have forgotten the sacrifices of those who died and those whose lives were forever changed on this date?
I am reminded of a diplomatic dinner involving the French, Canadians, English, Australians and Americans. The Frenchman was complaining and asked why these events always had to be held in English. The American said that because of the Canadians, English, Australians and Americans, the French didn’t have to hold them in German.
Because of what happened on June 6, 1944, we have the privilege of being hung up on gay marriage and bikinied baristas instead of Hitler’s birthday, etc.
