Regarding the letter “Bible conclusive on homosexuality”: Does this writer know that we don’t live in a theocracy? We do not have a state/federal run church that is supposed to tell us how to belief, live and vote. You are free to believe in your version of the bible. We are a nation founded on religious freedom and individual rights.
Thanks to the First Amendment, which states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”
We are not just a Christian nation, we are a multi-religious/spiritual nation. This is not about religious freedom (or freedom from religion), we pretty much have that, this is about civil rights.
Do you remember when people, religious zealots usually, once based their bias on the bible for interracial marriages to be illegal? I do. They are now using that same argument for lesbian and gay couples. It didn’t make sense then, it doesn’t make sense now. You go ahead and believe in your version of the Bible (which has been modified, re-translated many times, to suit the ruling classes — kings, popes, cardinals to name a few and varies in translations from Christian sect to sect), that is your right in this non-theocratic nation.
The government gave the churches the right to perform civil marriages as they see fit. It made the process of getting married easier, instead of having to go to a judge and then a church; you got to do it with one fell swoop. Lesbian and gays are asking for this same civil right. There are many churches out there that will perform these marriages, but yours doesn’t have to, that is called religious freedom.
So, for whomever is reading this, please vote to uphold the civil rights of all of our citizens, Approve Referendum 74.
