I enjoyed the Nov. 8 letter submitted by Mikel and Elizabeth Little of Camano Island and their family titled “Homefront: Let’s take care of our neighbors in need.” I agree with the letter completely but feel that there are several other things that should be mentioned.
The people of America have millions of families on the streets, living in automobiles and under freeway bridges. These groups of people need all the help they can get and are certainly more deserving than Afghanistan’s children and adults. They are our people, some of whom are military veterans plus other good Americans who have come upon hard times. It is normal to feel love for children regardless of their nationality, but it is also paramount that we take care of our own people. These unfortunates love this country whereas many of these foreigners hate the United States and that includes their children.
A television program recently focused on the “throw-away children” living on the streets in Portland. These young people were pathetic. Many end up as prostitutes, both male and female. They exist in an atmosphere of rape, beatings and narcotics.
Who deserves our help? Is it our own people or is it total strangers -who should be cared for by their own governments?
