We had to start somewhere

What happened within the area of The Daily Herald’s readership? Saturday’s “Reader to Reader” letters to the editor were so positive about the communities there. Now Sunday we learn that there is no defending the law of the land. I am no expert on health care, but I am also not feckless enough to say that we have the best health care system in the world. My first child was born in Colombia with the care of a doctor completely schooled in that country. The birth experience for my wife baby and I was ever so much better than that for my second child, who was born in the U.S. My son and I both came close to death on separate occasions outside of the U.S. and received excellent medical attention there. I chose to have knee-replacement surgery on both knees in Singapore by a doctor with degrees there and in Germany, Scotland and the U.S. Both knees are doing very well. A coworker went back to the states for his knee replacement and is very unhappy with the result.

All these facts are simply personal experiences and cannot determine public policy. Here are a few concerns that I do believe U.S. health care experts agree upon: increasing obesity, shortage of doctors, large numbers of uninsured, excessive and inappropriate use of emergency facilities, and rapidly rising costs.

The Affordable Care Act is the only attempt in decades to deal with some of the problems. Speaker Boehner repeatedly states that we have the best system in the world. Republicans often ask why else do so many come to the U.S. for medical care. Well, I know that there are a lot of citizens who go outside the states for their care, and more would if Medicare would pay for it. Give Obamacare a chance and then we can work on changes to parts that do not improve the system.

Comment: What the ceasefire means; and what it doesn’t

Hopes for a broader Mideast peace are faint at best, but stability provides a path for further agreements.
