Once again one of our fine protectors of the people is coldly murdered by the absolute worst of our society. After reading the account of this vicious, cowardly act I can only come to the conclusion that we need way more officers on our streets. I have a big news flash for everyone: We can’t spend enough on law enforcement. It is to the point where we need two officers in every patrol car.
From what I understand, this officer was on patrol alone. So was the Des Moines officer killed last year by a known and wanted felon. We ask these men and women to do an incredibly dangerous job for us. Then we turn around and hamstring them with budget issues. If I had to pay an extra nickel in taxes to hire more officers for our safety and their safety, then it’s money well spent.
My heart and condolences go out to this brave officer’s wife and children. And to you, Deputy Richard Herzog, for doing a tough job against the odds – a grateful society thanks you.
