If the purpose of Initiative 1631 is to begin cutting down on the emission of greenhouse gases — and it should be — then “punishing” the firms that supply diesel for trucks, ship and ferries, fuel for airplanes, gas for heating homes, thereby increasing costs for everyone, is not the way to go. Any fees or fines imposed on the suppliers of fuels will simply be passed along to us consumers.
How about beginning by buying smaller, lighter cars, SUVs and trucks; vehicles that manage to get more than 15 miles per gallon? Have you looked at the size of new model pickup trucks lately? They are so huge, one needs a ladder just to get up into them.
