We need to identify the truly needy

There have been a number of letters to the editor lately about the crime problem in Everett.

There is no mystery as to the source of much of the problem. Just take a ride along the length of Broadway and you will see significant numbers of “homeless” people wandering the streets. Where do they come from? What draws them to Everett?

The homeless come from four main sources. These are the mentally incompetent and mentally ill; the drug and alcohol addicted; the juvenile runaways and throwaways; and those who have fallen on hard times through no fault or deficiency of their own.

When I was a young man, society took care of the mentally ill in mental institutions. These facilities were far from perfect, but I believe they are way ahead of letting these folks wander aimlessly on the streets.

The juvenile situation has worsened through the years as society takes away parental authority and pretends that minors have a full set of rights (including the right to disrespect their elders).

Drug addiction has increased as the media glorifies drug use, and casual sex and violence. Besides, there is a lot of money to make on meth, B.C. Bud, etc.

What draws these people to Everett? The Everett Gospel Mission! The county justice system should separate the trouble-causers from the truly needy right at the mission, and give the bums a one-way ticket to Northern Minnesota.
