As a 20-year Navy veteran, the double speak coming from the White House appalls me. Before we allocate one more dime, let alone $87 billion, for the reconstruction of Iraq, I suggest we include in this package the funding required for our disabled veterans.
As it stands now, retired disabled veterans are the only federal employees whose retirement entitlements are reduced by the amount of their disability entitlements. No other federal employee is penalized as the disabled veterans are. Both the House (HR 303) and the Senate (S 392) have endorsed removing this penalty but the president has consistently defeated their legislation. There are going to be disabled veterans returning from Iraq. We need to show them that we value their contributions and will support them for their service.
