In reference to the Aug. 8 editorial regarding tactics being used by the WEA, I felt compelled to respond. The WEA is very much in touch with its members. I have worked as a teacher in this state for nearly 20 years. In those years, I have seen state support for education and educators deteriorate. I will not receive a pay raise again this year, yet my out-of-pocket insurance costs will once again increase, creating a pay cut. I will again be asked to do more with less. I am tired of waiting for the state to do what is right in supporting education and paying its teachers fairly. Historically, Washington has not responded adequately in funding the needs of students or educators. I join many in supporting the WEA and its approach to dealing with the demeaning manner in which the lawmakers of this state view education.
I fully support the WEA’s efforts to hold our state’s leadership accountable for the initiatives passed by our supportive voting community. Teachers in this state have waited, compromised, cooperated, and waited some more for the state to appropriately fund education for our children and pay teachers what they are worth. It is time for educators, parents and our supportive communities to take action by supporting those in government that support education and working to defeat those who do not. Our “education” governor caved in this year, succumbing to the call of big business, while taking away from those who truly deserve to be funded. Shame on him and the lawmakers who supported the budget and took away the initiatives designed to begin to make education a valued commodity in this state.
