Welcome to the USS Lincoln

The floating city called the Abe Lincoln welcomed visitors Wednesday. A few interesting facts about the ship:

  • The flight deck is about 4.5 acres, which sounds big until you consider they have to land airplanes on it. And you think parallel parking in downtown Seattle is bad.

  • 13,000 sodas are consumed each day. No statistics were available on how many trips to the head that translates into.

  • 5,500 pounds of laundry get done each day, which is even more than your son brings home from college on holidays.

Teens just blip right over the messages of responsibility crafted into drinking ads, according to a study. (Page A4) The study suggests some stunning revelations. Teens, it appears, are more interested in pictures of beautiful people than they are in messages telling them to behave themselves and stay safe. Shocking.

Pickled herring is a serious topic in the Netherlands. Someone sent journalists death threats, saying they would be killed if their paper ran its annual review of pickled herring stands. Whoever threatened them is still a mystery – but the bigger mystery is why anyone would eat pickled herring.

Did you enjoy the heat on the Fourth of July? While you were out having fun, your plants might have been getting a little wilted. Luckily, Debra Smith has advice for you on how to water plants correctly. It seems like a simple chore, but if it were foolproof, our potted plants wouldn’t be screaming for help.
