I was, and still am, saddened by the news that Jeri Costa feels she has to leave her seat as a state senator. Not only the men, women and children of our state, but also the victims of violent crimes will be losing a dedicated, knowledgeable, and hardworking legislative advocate.
As Sen. Costa noted, “the financial and personal impact of being a state legislator for nearly eight years has taken its toll. I can no longer afford – financially or personally – to devote the time that I believe is necessary to be an effective public servant.”
It is our society’s shame when successful legislators have to step down because we taxpayers will not give our dedicated elected official a livable wage. Must the longevity of our elected governmental agents be based on their upper-class financial status?
I have no doubt this distinguished citizen will continue to serve her community by remaining a strong voice for victims. On behalf of all victims and victims agencies of our state and nation, I wish to publicly say thank you 38th District Sen. Jeralita Costa for your devotion to us and may you continue in your successful endeavors.
