On May 5, eight students from Garfield Elementary School – Shane, Elizabeth, Ray, Melissa, Michael, Kelly, Jerrold and Caitlyn – competed in the fifth grade Math Olympics in Bellingham. Since last fall, they had given up their free time to study difficult and challenging math problems to prepare for the competition. Both teams of four students earned high marks for superior performance, and they excellently represented their school and the Everett School District.
A picture of the glorious team and a story was sent to The Herald to help celebrate these fine children’s exploits. How tragic it is that the local newspaper that suffers us with almost daily stories and pictures of Alex Rodriguez could not find even a few square centimeters of newspaper to celebrate the academic achievement of some hard-working elementary school students. Their commitment of time, their studying and their academic accomplishments should fill our local newspaper whenever the opportunity arises. Let’s give these heroes and similar children the recognition and celebration they deserve.
