Put on a helmet and hang on tight: Today we’re taking our way-back machine for a spin, and last time we checked, seat belts didn’t come standard. So swallow your Dramamine and let’s go to:
1894. That’s the year the world’s third-oldest person, a California woman, was born. At that time, Grover Cleveland was president and no one knew about the curative properties of penicillin. In contrast, when your humble Buzz correspondent was born, Jimmy Carter was president and no one knew anything about Grover Cleveland.
Moving on. A little twist of our time machine’s dial and we’re in:
1966. That’s when the U.S. Navy retrieved a hydrogen bomb it lost off the coast of Spain. We took a quick trip back to 2008 to ask the Internet what that was all about, whereupon we discovered that the bomb was lost in a midair collision and not because someone had butterfingers.
Still, we’re feeling a little nervous now, so we’re heading to:
1983. The year when thousands of tires caught fire at the Everett landfill, producing a foul smell and causing paper mill officials to ask in a hurt voice, “Why’s everybody looking at us?”
