We’ve seen scare tactics regarding refugees before

After reading Michael Bond’s Nov. 12 letter (“Invaders plan to take country over”) I was ready to head to the parapets to defend my neighborhood from alien invasion. But then I realized that I don’t have any parapets and that 7,000 poor Central American men, women and children walking 2,000 miles to legally seek asylum in the United States are no threat to this country or to me personally.

These scare tactics of the current administration and its Fox News allies are not new. I grew up in the ‘50s when we were told that there were Commies hiding in our closets ready to steal and destroy the American dream. Since then we have continued to thrive as a country and at the same time welcome thousands of Cubans, Vietnamese, Iranians and other refugees into this country. These are all people fleeing death and persecution in search of a better life. This “invasion” of Central Americans is no different.

Trump and his supporters should welcome these people into the United States. If you want people who truly value freedom and hard work and show it by walking 2,000 miles to achieve a better life then I can’t think of a better group of people to help make America great again.
