Congratulations and thank you, Silvertips, for a wonderful season and a great ride to the WHL championship series.
As a long-time hockey fan, having lived in a number of NHL cities, I can say I have never enjoyed hockey as much as I have this Silvertips season.
A team of players that nobody wanted came together and, with excellent coaching, became a team of over-achievers. With hard work and a desire to win, your team has accomplished more than any other expansion team has in any sport. A first-year team with championship banners hanging from the rafters is an accomplishment that is truly amazing. Yes, the genie was let out of the bottle during the Medicine Hat series. An end to a season with some disappointment, but what an awesome season.
My hat is off to the Medicine Hat team for winning the WHL championship. But my accolades go out to a little band of scrappers who have captured the hearts of Everett hockey fans forever.
Can’t wait until next year. This old hockey fan will be there in his Silvertips ballcap, cheering until his voice is gone.
A parting thought to the Everett Silvertips hockey fans: Earn the reputation as the loudest arena in the league, but become knowledgeable and fair hockey fans. These are young men playing a sport they love. Hockey has been their lives and for many of them the WHL will be the end of a dream. Be fair and applaud excellent play no matter the player. I was a little disappointed in the attitude many fans had toward the Medicine Hat players after their win. Be hockey fans that the Silvertips can be proud of.
