We are writing today to express our frustration at the direction that our county council is taking in regard to growth issues. In The Herald last week we read that there is a movement to slacken the rules regarding average speeds on certain county roads in order to allow more development to proceed. We were astonished to read that an average speed of 13 mph should somehow be considered “acceptable” (during commuting hours, we assume?).
The roads around Lake Stevens, especially Highway 9, are already very slow at commute times and weekends. We’d like to state for the record that any slower is not acceptable. What happened to the concept of “concurrence,” that roads, parks, schools, water, wildlife protection, etc. will keep pace with development?
Housing development is not the only economic machine in the county. What happens when we can’t get to our jobs in Everett or Mukilteo? It will soon be too much trouble to fight the traffic to attend clubs and events in Everett. We have already passed our safe and livable limit in regard to density.
Recently, we read in The Herald that three incumbent council members are accepting large cash contributions from the major developers in the county! What should our conclusions be?
