What’s behind the right’s fervor over gun rights?

In his Aug. 8 letter, David Martson of Marysville claimed that Second Amendment gun rights are God-given. It seems like over the years as our politics have become more and more divisive, people on the right have increasingly claimed to speak for God more so than anyone on the left.

At the same time, right-leaning people are much more fervent in maintaining liberal gun rights, regardless of the impact of those rights on the life and rights of the victims of gun violence.

I wonder why. Are they planning to go to war with their neighbors who are different than them? Are we as a nation headed in the same direction as the Middle East where extremist have used violence for centuries to force an entire region to bend to their interpretation of God’s word?
