What’s ‘hip’ and ‘cool’ these days?

I went with my sister and 10-year-old niece to see “The Prince and Me” the other day. We’ve been to many movies over the past couple of years, some G-rated, some PG-rated. I thought we had the system figured out, but now I’m not sure. I need help deciphering the “hip” and the “cool” parts of this one.

Hip or cool?: Passing a slow-moving vehicle on the right because you simply could not be bothered to take the time to pass safely and correctly, or not pass at all.

Hip or cool?: Arriving late for your best friend’s wedding, throwing dust and dirt all over the wedding party as you skid into the parking lot, no apologies, no offer of an explanation. And you’re obviously a member of the wedding party.

Hip or cool?: Drinking as soon as you arrive at your college campus, and being “forced” by your friends to do a shot because they don’t want to hear about your dedication to your life career and college study demands. Oh, and they don’t even pay for the shot they force down your throat; they take it from a nearby table of other college drinkers.

Hip or cool?: Viewing drunken college girls exposing themselves on TV and deciding that is how you will decide where to go to get away from the irresponsible, privileged life you currently lead.

I’m sure there are endless hip/cool problems posed by this movie. I wasn’t there to see them. We left the theater in disbelief. What words did I use to describe what we had just seen to my niece? Disgusting? Nope. Filthy? Nope. Crass and self-centered? Close. No, I just shook my head sadly and said, “How pitiful.”

Hip or cool?: Leaving the theater rather than watch any more insulting content. Probably neither. But it was the right thing to do.
