Regarding the new sports arena being built in Everett: It is well documented on the pages of your newspaper that I have never been in favor of the location of this facility. There were better locations.
However, I am writing this letter to call the public’s attention to the hornswaggle that is taking place.
First the facilities commission and the former mayor insisted the construction would furnish local union members lots of employment. Not a fact. PCL brought their own people in. Perhaps they transferred their cards to Everett, but I doubt it. Local carpenters, ironworkers and laborers were left begging.
The project is now to the point where they are setting pre-cast units. My question is: Where did these pre-cast units come from? The only pre-cast yards that I know of are in Tacoma and British Columbia. Is this local employment?
They could have been cast on site using local workers, but no, like Boeing, outsourcing is cheaper and local labor goes wanting.
Whether or not a professional hockey team or this arena is successful, we will still have to pay.
