Last weekend NBC aired the updated “We are the World” video filmed post Grammy Awards. Yes, it was filled with top music stars, yes it is moving, yes it will raise awareness and money for Haiti. And no, I do not want compassion and help for those in need to stop.
But when are they going to record “We are the United States”? And how is it that we still have money to pay bonuses and huge salaries to Wall Street and banking institutions when the majority of Americans are still being financially crushed? If the music industry can inspire help for Haiti in addition to that sent by the United States government, maybe it behooves us to ask the music industry to record our song, the song of the dwindling middle class. Maybe the music industry can create a song and video that will move the Party of No and the Party of Sorry About That Not Working Out Like We Planned to come together and save this country. It seems to me that many have forgotten that we are the United States.
