It has been frustrating to read the articles over the past several months regarding Kay Powers, Carol Whitehead and Cascade High School. I support Ms. Whitehead in what she has done. As the superintendent, she is responsible for the schools and the actions of the teachers. If there is a teacher who is not teaching and living with integrity (which Ms. Powers was not doing), then Ms. Whitehead should have full authority to gather the evidence that she needs and to take appropriate action.
There is too much sympathy being shown to Ms. Powers. The example that she has set for the youth of Cascade High School is reprehensible. I hope that in her new position that she has learned from her mistakes (and it was her mistakes, not the mistakes of the leadership of Cascade High School or the Everett School District). In my profession, if an employee were to have acted as she did, there would not have been another position waiting for them somewhere else in the company. She would have been out looking for new employment. She has been shown more mercy than what should have been.
Ms. Powers has an obligation to teach the students to honor and obey the rules and laws. If there are rules or laws that they do not agree with, there are ways and means to promote change. However, they also need to understand that their desired changes may not be in the best interest of the whole. And if that is the case, then they need to live within the rules.
Thank you, Ms. Whitehead, for looking out for the students of Cascade High School.
