The letter from Sherwood Sage (“Support for Trump was about values of evangelical voters,” The Herald, Nov. 13) was refreshing in that it struck a civil tone, but I feel compelled to respond. He cites three values that he says the Democratic Party has been intolerant of or hostile to. I would like to address them:
1. Nobody has attempted to deny anyone the right to a biblical marriage between a man and a woman. But evangelicals actively seek to deny gay unions to everyone. What ever happened to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”?
2. Allowing “yet unborn children” to live. There is much well-intentioned disagreement as to when a zygote/fetus is endowed with a soul. Does a cluster of cells have self-awareness? I think not.
3. The spurious allegation that Democrats condone letting a living baby die (or worse yet, killing it) is false and outrageous. Such behavior is not only repugnant, but already illegal throughout our country.
Then he finishes by saying Democrats accuse his people of “things that are not true” and that it “smacks of slander.” As people are compelled to choose between the two major parties, I ask: Who is slandering whom?
