Our election system is broken. I just received my ballot in the mail and election day isn’t until Feb. 19. Half the presidential candidates for each party have already dropped out of the race and their names are still on the printed ballot.
Not only that, but the Democratic votes in this state don’t count for anything because the delegates will be chosen at the caucuses, and the Republican ballots only count for half because the caucuses will count for the other half.
On top of that, independent voters have been disenfranchised because they cannot vote, at all, without lying and pledging themselves to one party or the other. Why bother to have a presidential primary if only the avowed Democrats and Republicans can vote? We should stop spending taxpayer money on elections that are restricted to just Republican and Democratic party members. It’s time to change our broken election system and give every registered voter a chance to make each vote count.
