The recent article about public school children going on an Islamic pilgrimage has me wondering if we have separation of Christianity and state not separation of church and state? The law says to share facts about religions, not faith. Many facts about why religions celebrate are explained in schools but Christian celebrations are avoided.
I have two teachers I support wholeheartedly and I’m thankful for their help educating my children; I do not envy their position in this issue.
It seems the problem lies in fear of the ACLU and our inability to identify doctrine of any religion except Christianity. Can you identify Hindu doctrine? Can your teachers or administrators identify Wiccan doctrine?
Last December children likely learned about Hanukkah and Kwanza, but were facts about Christians’ Christmas included? Were they told that stars topping Christmas trees symbolize the night Jesus was born? Have they ever had a nativity scene explained in school?
The Supreme Court ruled twice that the Bible can and should be a history book in schools. How many school children know the Bible is the best selling book of all time or that 2000 A.D. means after the birth of Jesus Christ? Don’t Hindu or Islamic children deserve those facts just as Christian children learn the way others celebrate?
Christian children aren’t validated, they don’t hear teachers explain their celebrations. It’s almost like a secret. Teachers do somewhat allow children to speak their own faith but don’t feel comfortable adding facts.
Teachers need reminding of district’s policies regarding teaching religious holidays and know the district supports them sharing facts.
Today is Easter and I believe every American child in this melting pot deserves to know why they see empty crosses on top of churches all over America? What do the crosses mean? Why do Christians celebrate Easter?
Christian children can and should be validated and hear their religious holidays (Christmas, Easter) explained in school, as children who celebrate Kwanza feel validated when their celebrations are discussed. Christian holidays should be included, especially on holidays when even McDonald’s is closed. It’s fair and right.
