Being a 1958 graduate of Marysville High School I wanted to try to respond to the great mystery of the Tomahawks (“Marysville coaches welcome inquiry,” March 19).
Am I the only person who wonders why the largest high school in the state has so much trouble producing good teams? I’m not only referring to the present. Except for very few exceptions Marysville has been the whipping boy for the entire league in most sports for as long as I can remember. When I meet people from Burlington, Anacortes, Mount Vernon, Snohomish and other schools in our area and the subject of sports come up, Marysville is accorded no respect whatsoever.
For many years I have lived on Camano and followed Stanwood High School sports, missing very few football and basketball games – which means seeing the Tommies numerous times each year. Is it something in the water? Don’t the best athletes turn out? Aren’t the kids getting encouragement from their parents? Is it the coaching? Is it the athletic director not building a bottom-up learning process for the grammar school kids?
There has to be an answer as to why programs like Snohomish or Arlington or any other numerous programs produce winners year after year and Marysville just limps along in the middle of the pack. Any suggestions?
