IDENTITY THEFT
When are our public officials going to do something about dumpster diving? People are stealing our property from our trashcans. Identity theft is a major problem. Our personal lives seem to be fair game for these thieves. I’ve watched an individual walk along our street and remove items from every trash can. And it’s legal! That’s right, the courts have ruled that anyone can steal your property from your trashcan. Public property, they say. My mailbox is on city property too. And if I leave my lawnmower in the area between the sidewalk and street does someone have the right to take it?
My neighbors and I have had to buy shredders and hope no documents are accidentally put in the trash. Why don’t our politicians correct this? It seems simple enough. Make the contents of our trashcans our property until picked up by trash disposal. A properly worded law should be acceptable even to our courts. It’s absolutely ridiculous to allow these thieves to interfere in our personal lives and steal our property.
