It’s incredible that Community Transit is asking us to approve a sales tax hike that will give us the highest sales tax in the state. Sure, bus service is a great thing to have, especially when the buses are full. However, what we have is an inefficient system where fares pay a pitiful portion of the operating cost (less than 20 percent). Plus we have a transit bureaucracy that spends an exorbitant amount each year on staff retreats, travel, consultants, lobbyists and PR agencies.
Community Transit has not proven that they are responsible with our money to justify giving them more. If, in a few years they can re-invent themselves and can show that they can be responsible and efficient, then they should come back and see about more funding. On second thought, if they were more efficient, they wouldn’t need a tax hike.
Vote no on the Snohomish County Public Transportation Benefit Area Corporation Proposition 1, the 0.3 percent sales tax increase.
