If the concept of “active engagement” with China will somehow cause China to become democratic, or at least less oppressive, why wouldn’t the same be true with Cuba? Americans cherish democracy, but why must we try to shove it down Cuba’s throat, while opening our market to China? Doesn’t China have a worse record than Cuba in human rights and freedom? Do we really still need to worry about communism? If I were a Cuban-American, I suppose I’d be bitter, but are they really helping their kin in Cuba?
