Ticked off: Herald outdoors columnist Sharon Wootton shares her experiences with ticks, the blood-sucking arachnids that bedevil those venturing into the woods, particularly east of the Cascades. Wootton provides all the gory details on how to safely pick ticks.
It’s enough to persuade The Buzz to skip that hike and burrow deeper under the covers. Until he recalls the recent stories about the resurgence of bedbugs.
Fugheddaboudit: A baboon may be on the loose in New Jersey. Police have received reports of a monkey wandering neighborhoods, but the Six Flags Great Adventure Monkey Jungle, home to 150 baboons, hasn’t been able to figure out if one of its monkeys is missing.
Adding to the confusion is the fact that the cast of HBO’s “Jersey Shore,” preparing for its fifth season, has been unusually active and had been released from their pens.
If you go into the woods today: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says that a photo of a bear taken by a hiker with a cellphone near Marblemount in Skagit County is of a grizzly, perhaps the first confirmed sighting of the endangered bear in a half-century.
Having thought things through, we’ll take our chances with the bedbugs.
