Preservation is the culprit. Really? (“Preservation should get blame in wildfires, smoke,” Herald letter to the editor, Aug. 29)
You can always tell who listens to Fox News and gets their talking points from the pundits. The recent letter indicates how little understanding the person has as it pertains to the abundance of fires we are experiencing. This is a direct result of the planet warming from the burning of fossil fuels. We now have fires worldwide in places never seen before, like above the Arctic Circle.
California has had years of drought, then record rain, then drought which caused the new growth to dry out and provide tinder for fires that caused billions of dollars in damage, and loss of life. It wasn’t environmentalist who caused this; it is people who ignore the reality of coal and oil extraction. The scientists who claim that climate change is a hoax are the same ilk who were paid by the cigarette industry claiming smoking didn’t cause cancer. We now know that was a lie.
It has been shown that the coal-oil industry scientists told their CEOs as early as the 1970s-80s that the burning of carbon would create climate change. But their profits were more important than the life of our planet and the future of our children.
We have the science and ability to change this trend but it requires an intelligent response not a rant from an uniformed citizen who is willing to allow the extraction companies to profit and not pay for the damage they cause worldwide.
