When I see people like the person on the front page of the Saturday Herald who looks to be of Medicare age and likely a Social Security recipient calling for smaller government, I wonder if they could live without it.
Did they indirectly benefit from their retired parents’ reliance on those programs, so their parents were not a burden on the kids? Did they get to go to Glacier, or Yellowstone, or Mount Rainier national parks? Did they get a public education? Do they get to turn the tap on and get fresh, safe water, or go to the grocery store and get food that isn’t tainted? Do they go out into the world and know that there are rules of behavior that will be enforced so that they are not victims of discrimination, fraud, violence or preventable accidents? Do they want their children and grandchildren to have the same, or less? Just asking.
