I have been depressed. Last week I told Mindy (my wife) that we should cancel The Herald. I held up the first section to her and said there is not one positive story in the entire of section. I was depressed before I got my paper. Then comes Saturday morning with the wonderful story about the Mukilteo Police officers personally helping out the Alabama family who had their gifts stolen. Add that to the fact that we are getting the Broadway bridge back and open on Dec. 8 and we are getting on a roll. Another item on the front page was also good news. I drive through Bend, Oregon, at least twice a year to visit friends and I’m a craft beer drinker. I had no idea Bend was a leader in craft beers; bravo — three positive stories on the front page.
All of that and Dear Abby, sports, my favorite funnies and I’m a happy camper. For me the front page sets the tone. We all know that if five people die in a car accident it gets the headline. Save the stories of what good people do — it changes my perception.
