Am I the only person with a memory long enough to remember that just a very short time ago both Marysville and Arlington were wringing their hands trying to figure out where their next tax dollar was coming from?
I would like to point out to those opposed to “the noise, crowds, loss of quality-of-lifers” who cry and wail and tear at their clothes about a NASCAR track being built in the Marysville area, (cousins to those who don’t want air travel available at Paine Field because it will devalue their house) that Dover, Del., has a very profitable, well-received, always sold out, point of civic pride, NASCAR 1-mile racetrack smack dab in the middle of the city! Of course, the owners were smart enough to design into the structure some really nice shops, restaurants and a casino. They almost need a tractor trailer to haul the money generated to the bank. The only negatives I heard from residents about the facility was the suspicion that the casino was crooked.
Want to build a track? By all means, build it in my backyard, I’m smart enough to realize a cash cow when I see one! Perhaps building the track will finally cause the county planning board to wake up and really do suburban planning instead of allowing Snohomish County to look like the modern reincarnation of Milltown.
And, by the way, NASCAR fans aren’t wad-chewing, red-necked hicks. We spend big bucks when we go to a race on hotels, food, entertainment, rental cars and clothes. If it generates a buck, we buy it, and the local merchants are glad to sell it to you.
