On Aug. 9 Mr. Clint Kelly wrote, “Hooray for Missouri voters who very wisely supported a constitutional ban on gay marriage. The ban is a necessary protection to keep even more of our children from growing up motherless or fatherless” (“Gays are small portion of citizenry”). I would very much like Mr. Kelly to explain his logic here.
From my perspective, Mr. Kelly’s attitude is nothing short of ignorant bigotry and this confuses me, as I know the man to be quite intelligent. I also know the man to be quite religious. I would hope that a man of God, especially his Christian God, would be more tolerant of those he shares a community with. The Inquisition is over, the Nazi concentration camps are gone. Isn’t it about time we grow up and stop hiding behind the fears of our ancestors? If the religion you subscribe to is venomous toward a group of people for simply being who they are, that’s fine, but keep it to yourself. This kind of hatred has no place in state affairs.
Of all the letters The Herald receives every day for publication, why would you choose to print that which is so obviously hateful and illogical?
