Regarding the news that Terapon Dang Adhahn will not face the death penalty:
What is your child worth? How much would you take for her? What would you give for her? I am stunned and sickened to see yet another county prosecutor trade away the death penalty to make their detectives’ jobs easier. Rather than investigate these heinous crimes and prepare a court case, they trade off the death penalty so they don’t need to investigate, they just take notes. The death penalty is not an investigative tool to be used by prosecutors, it belongs to the people of the state of Washington. It is the ultimate way we determine the value of human life. Without it, a deviant can live out his most perverse and evil fantasies for as long as he can (literally destroying human lives in the process) and then get three squares, health care and more without having to work another day in their life. Is that what your child is worth?
I would risk my life, perhaps even lose it, to stop one of these monsters from taking anyone’s child. How much more right is it to require the guilty to pay with his life for taking one of these innocents? The wrong people are paying with their lives and the government that is in existence to protect us sees our death penalty as something they can use as a bargaining chip rather than a sacred trust to administer on our behalf. If for no other reason, the death penalty exists as a public statement about how we value innocent lives. The statement I hear loud and clear from our county prosecutors concerning the value of life is, “We won’t be undersold.”
