This is in response to the Thursday letter, “D-Day article would be appropriate”: I agree with his letter to The Herald. There was not even a mention in the June 6 paper. I would be interested to know how many readers (especially younger people) are aware of this date. And the meaning.
I remember ration books, smashing cans, and the yellow capsule inside the lard that we broke open and mushed around so the white lard turned yellow. I remember bomb drills, where everyone in school got a piece of cardboard, marched to the basement and sat on the cardboard with our arms around our legs. I remember Stamp Day, buying stamps to fill a book, and later convert to a Savings Bond. I remember not meeting my father until I was 3 years old. I remember all the patriotic songs, how our nation was united, the sounds of all the airplanes over our home. And when World War II ended. I am proud of the “Greatest Generation,” and I would like them to know I offer my thanks, prayers and remembrance.
