With Monroe approaching its centennial next year, voters have a chance to build for the future.
City voters are being asked to decide on Proposition 1, a $5.1 million general obligation bond to construct and equip a community center that would include a swimming pool. Voters should say yes to the bond, which will pave the way for a healthier future.
The proposal involves a partnership between the city and the YMCA of Snohomish County. The YMCA would seek private donations of about $2 million and contract with the city to operate the facility at no additional charge to taxpayers. The city plans to provide the land, and both the property and the facility will remain under its ownership. Any city taxpayers who choose to join the Y will receive a 20 percent discount on membership fees.
With a swimming pool, exercise areas and meeting rooms, the planned center would be a significant plus for Monroe. The city has focused on using what appears to be the best available site, but the council has not ruled out a different location if a better one can be found. For a rapidly growing city, though, it’s time to invest in the future.
