Hopefully your Nov. 12 editorial endorsing the extension of unemployment benefits for out of work Washingtonians will encourage each of us to think and act compassionately with those in our neighborhood, workplace and community (“Make holidays happy: Extend jobless benefits”). For example, volunteer leaders at the YMCA of Snohomish County with branch operations in Everett, Marysville, Mukilteo, Monroe and southeast county have enthusiastically embraced the no-cost extension of memberships for those receiving layoff notices.
This will, we believe, help many families and individuals enjoy the holiday season and endure these challenging times before their return to employment. Benefits from Congress will accomplish a great deal, but so will our concern, creativity and friendly outreach with those closest to us.
