Regarding the Monday letter, “Lane’s sentencing a total injustice”: I, for one, am not up in arms about Ray Lane’s shooting conviction. Yeah, he made a bad decision — four times! He didn’t shoot at the car once and make a bad decision, he did it four times. Also, he blocked the exit so they could not get away. If he was so worried about trespassers why didn’t he block the entrance before this happened?
The prison system is full of people who made a bad decision; why do people always say that the criminal justice system needs to be changed after it is someone they know going to prison? The writer states no one got hurt. Well, that was a by the grace of God. If he had gone free that would leave an open door for people to just go around shooting shotguns at anyone. There was no proof these kids were doing anything wrong here, except for parking in the wrong spot. Does that justify attempted murder? How would the writer feel if someone shot at his kids with a shotgun for looking at the stars? Yes, there are good teenagers that do that. He should have been happy to see someone using his property for something nice like that.
You can’t take the law into your own hands. I agree with the judge.
