1B Boys District 1 Tournament
First round: Shoreline Christian at Tulalip Heritage, Lopez at Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace, Grace Academy at Mount Vernon Christian, Highland Christian at Lummi, all Saturday night, 7 p.m.
Semifinals: Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon Christian
Championship: Friday, 7:45 p.m. at Mount Vernon Christian
Advancing: Top five advance to tri-district tournament, which begins Feb. 9.
Big storylines: This is an interesting tournament since one half of this tournament play in the 1B League while the other half play in the more diverse Northwest 1A/2B/1B League. Will playing against teams like Friday Harbor and La Conner help a team like Cedar Park Christian? Or did avoiding that bruising schedule help a team like No. 1 seed Lummi? The Lions lost just two games all season — to 1A Friday Harbor and 2B La Conner. Lummi, meanwhile, finished the season 10-1 in the Northwest 1B League, its only loss coming to Tulalip Heritage (8-3).
Favorite: Cedar Park Christian-MLT. The Lions’ tougher schedule will show dividends in the playoffs.
Dark horse: Tulalip Heritage. Led by DJ Kidd and Payton Comenote, the Hawks are a real threat.
Matchup we want to see: Cedar Park Christian-MLT and Lummi. The rematch of an earlier season game — CPC-MLT beat Lummi 66-55 — should be much closer.
Key players: Terry Eun (CPC-MLT), Jordan Deardorff (Lummi), Kidd (TH), Earl Johnson (Lummi), Wilson Reidt (CPC-MLT), Eric Matson (CPC-MLT), Jeremiah Lee (GA), Isaiah VanDam (GA).
Picks: 1. Cedar Park Christian, 2. Lummi, 3. Tulalip Heritage, 4. Grace Academy, 5. Mount Vernon Christian.
1B Girls District 1 Tournament
First round: Cedar Park Christian-MLT at Grace Academy, Lummi at Mount Vernon Christian, Lopez at Shoreline Christian, Highland Christian at Tulalip Heritage, all Saturday, 4:45 p.m.
Semifinals: Wednesday, 3 p.m. at Mount Vernon Christian
Championship: Friday, 6 p.m. at Mount Vernon Christian
Advancing: Top five advance to tri-district tournament, which begins Feb. 9.
Favorite: Mount Vernon Christian. Tulalip Heritage finished the regular season 14-2 but one of those defeats came at the hands of MVC.
Dark horse: Tulalip Heritage. Really only two teams have the talent to win this tournament and the other teams is the Hawks, who went unbeaten and were rarely challenged during the 1B season. There’s no doubt they can play with and beat MVC.
Key players: Jacqueline Case (MVC), Katia Brown (TH), Adiya Jones-Smith (TH), Kyla Emme (GA), Jessica Hoogerhyde (SC), Natalie Sakuma (MVC), Sarah Ott (SC).
Picks: 1. Mount Vernon Christian, 2. Tulalip Heritage, 3. Shoreline Christian, 4. Grace Academy, 5. Cedar Park Christian-MLT.
