The Favorite
Lynnwood/Bellevue. Lynnwood and Bellevue have fought for the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press state poll all year. Both teams are nationally ranked. MaxPreps.com has Lynnwood as the No. 12 team in the nation in its MaxPreps Computer Rankings, right ahead of No. 13 Bellevue. However, the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 ranks Bellevue No. 13 and Lynnwood No. 15. Lynnwood finished the year No. 1 in the AP poll. Both teams are undefeated and could meet in the semifinals Friday night.
The Dark Horse
Um … Arlington? Someone has to play the winner of the Lynnwood-Bellevue half of the bracket. The bottom half of the bracket features two Wesco teams — Arlington and Edmonds-Woodway — as well as Kamiakin (14-10) and a 23-1 Lincoln squad that faces Arlington in the quarterfinals. The Eagles, ranked No. 3 in the final AP poll, didn’t fare well against Lynnwood when the two teams met in the district championship Feb. 20. The Royals handed Arlington its only loss of the season, 60-22, to clinch a district title. The Eagles rebounded with a big 49-30 victory over No. 6 Bishop Blanchet in regionals.
Did you know?
Lynnwood, Bellevue, Arlington and Lincoln have lost just two games combined this season. The rest of the bracket — Prairie, Mount Spokane, Edmonds-Woodway and Kamiakin — have combined for 34 losses this season.
Player to watch
Anna Wilson, guard, Bellevue. The sister of Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Russell Wilson, Anna transferred to Bellevue this season after moving to Washington state. The 5-foot-8 senior averages 16 points per game for the undefeated Wolverines. She will continue her career next season at Stanford.
Game we want to see
Lynnwood vs. Bellevue. Arlington vs. Lincoln should be an exciting quarterfinal, but the matchup everybody wants to see is a battle between the two undefeated and nationally ranked teams. With the way the bracket turned out, they would meet in a Friday night semifinal. While that won’t officially decide the state championship, it should be a great game.
Prediction
Lynnwood edges Bellevue in the semifinals and defeats Wesco rival Arlington in an all-Snohomish County championship game Saturday night to take its second consecutive 3A title.
