The three 3A schools in the Western Conference, Lynnwood, Meadowdale and Shorecrest, have decided to remain in the Wesco South, a primarily 4A league, for football for the next two-year cycle.
On Friday the Edmonds School District withdrew its request to have Lynnwood and Meadowdale play football in the Northwest 3A League next season.
No decision had been reached by the Northwest League on the Edmonds District’s request.
Last season neither Lynnwood or Meadowdale achieved the 6-3 record required to earn a postseason district playoff against the Northwest League runnerup.
“We never felt we had an efficient method for qualifying in football,” Edmonds District athletic director Terri McMahan said.
“We started looking at other options before we knew Shorecrest would be a 3A school.”
With a third 3A school, the Wesco teams are assured of receiving one-half of the district’s two state playoff berths, McMahan said. That means the highest-finishing 3A team will play the Northwest League runnerup for a state berth next season satisfying the qualification concern.
