Lot of stuff going on in Husky sports aside from the basketball games that were played last night. In case you missed it, the men’s team beat Oregon for its first Pac-10 win. Columnist John Sleeper was there too. Here’s his take on the game.
The women’s team didn’t fare as well on the road, losing at Oregon State after having a big first-half lead.
There was also big news on the football front yesterday as the Board of Regents approved a $300 million plan for stadium renovations. The school is planning on asking for half of that in public funds with the money coming from King County hotel-motel, rental car, and restaurant taxes, which are currently being used to pay for Qwest Field and Safeco Field. Those are the same tax dollars the Sonics tried and failed to get to help pay for a new arena, but word from Olympia seems to be that the Huskies have a lot better chance of getting public funding.
If the Huskies do in fact tax dollars for stadium renovations, it will be interesting to see how other public schools in the state react. Would folks in Pullman feel like they should get some of that money for work on Martin Stadium?
Major League Soccer held it’s SuperDraft today (really not sure what makes it so super, but hey, that’s what they call it). UW forward Ely Allen was drafted in the second round (21st overall) by the L.A. Galaxy, where he’ll surely now live the high life hanging out with David Beckham and Posh Spice. Or maybe not. He’ll also be joining the team of former Husky Ty Harden, who just finished his rookie season with the Galaxy.
Fellow Husky Kevin Forrest, an Edmonds-Woodway grad, was not drafted today. He had been invited to the pre-draft combine, but was not selected in the four-round draft.
Finally, volleyball coach Jim McLaughlin was given a five-year contract extension, which runs through 2012. McLaughlin led the Huskies to a national championship in 2005.
