We’re about four hours away from tip off of perhaps the make-or-break game of the season for the Washington men’s basketball team. Lorenzo Romar hasn’t made public his starting lineup, so we won’t know until the starting lineup is announced. As I’ve said before, I’d be surprised if Quincy Pondexter isn’t starting in place of Phil Nelson. The Huskies are as healthy as can be expected at this point, and Spencer Hawes, Pondexter and Adrian Oliver are all expected to play.
The news isn’t as good for Joel Smith. The junior guard has been out all season with foot injuries but earlier this week, Romar expressed some hope that Smith might return for next week’s games against Arizona State and Arizona. But after being X-rayed, it sounds like Smith won’t return next week and he’ll be re-evaluated in a couple weeks with the hope that he could come back for the next home series against Cal and Stanford. Romar and Smith have both said that Smith would not redshirt this year, but if Washington falters in the next few games and falls out of NCAA Tournament contention, it might be something that would be reconsidered.
The football news today is that Washington and Colorado will renew their rivalry that began in 1915, but it won’t be for awhile. The schools will pick things up in 2015 and 2016, with the Huskies playing in Boulder on Sept. 12, 2015 and the Buffaloes playing at Husky Stadium on Sept. 10, 2016. The schools have played 11 times, with each winning five times and tying once. The last meeting was in 2000, when Marques Tuiasosopo threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to lead the UW to a 17-14 win.
