A little Rob Johnson, a touch of Adam Moore, and a few notes

While the Mariners bussed down to Tucson for this afternoon’s massive Felix Hernandez start against the Rockies, most of the front-line players stayed back in Peoria to work out. I just stayed back.

Actually, the Tucson trip has always been a good mid-camp opportunity for me to have a change of pace and actually sleep past 6 a.m. Someone is keeping me up to snuff on the games at Tucson while I gather material for notes and future features from guys working out in Peoria.

In tomorrow’s sports section, we’ll have a piece on Adam Moore and how he has developed into a major league-ready catcher.

Until then, here are a few Sunday morning notes:

  • Catcher Rob Johnson will catch his first game tomorrow in Tucson and figures he’ll go four or five innings. Considering what he’s gone through this offseason, with surgery on both hips, will this be a sleepless night?

“When you’ve got an 18-month old, there are a lot of sleepless nights,” Johnson said.

Still, he’s more than eager to get back behind the plate.

  • The Mariners say only a handful of scattered single seats remain available for the April 12 home opener after single-game ticket sales began Saturday.
  • Utility infielder Jack Hannahan said he may hit off a tee tomorrow, his first baseball-related activity of any kind since he was shut down because of a mild strain of his right groin. If the early estimate holds that he’ll miss 7-10 days, Hannahan figures he’ll be able to play in games the final 1 1/2 to two weeks of the exhibitim season.
  • Relievers Mark Lowe and David Aardsma will pitch a simulated game Monday in Peoria. Danny Cortes also will pitch in that game.
